About Saint Irenaeus of Lyon:
Saint Irenaeus of Lyon, a prominent early Church father, was born around 130 AD in Smyrna (modern-day Izmir, Turkey). He became a disciple of Polycarp, who was a direct student of the Apostle John. Irenaeus later moved to Lyon, where he served as a bishop and played a vital role in the development of early Christian theology. He is best known for his work ‘Against Heresies,’ in which he defended the Christian faith against various heretical teachings, emphasising the importance of the apostolic tradition and the unity of the Church. Irenaeus taught that the Church, through the succession of bishops, preserves the teachings of Christ, thereby safeguarding the truth of the Gospel. Martyred around 202 AD, Saint Irenaeus is venerated as a champion of orthodoxy and a key figure in the fight against heresy. His feast day is celebrated on 28th June, and he is regarded as a significant theologian whose contributions continue to influence Christian thought.
